If any of the youth were unable to attend the family history center with us, here is a link to the form we gave out that will help them find a pioneer ancestor.

Each participant on trek will be
trekking “for someone”!

Who from your family history inspires you?
Is it a great grandparent or someone living now?
Search your family history for someone who
was a pioneer or who is a “modern day” pioneer!
Learn everything you can about that person and find a photo if you can.

Come to trek prepared to share their story!

NOTE TO LEADERS: We can't emphasize this enough, the youth will not be able to get an account without parental permission. If they don't have an account before coming, we will try to help them get one but it takes a long time and is not always successful without the parent being present. They will end up being disappointed and having a bad experience. We want everyone to have a good experience when they come here so that they will develop a desire to work on their family history.

Also, for any leaders (Ma's and Pa's) and/or youth that cannot attend with their designated ward date/time, please attend with one of the other available time slots.

April 28, (Saturday) 8:00 am – 2:00 pm Mosida visit with Ma’s and Pa’s.

May 2 (Wednesday) – Meet Trek Family--square dance 6:30 pm

June 10, (Sunday) – Trek Stake Kick-off Fireside

June 11-13 (Mon-Wed) – Stake Trek at Mosida

Prepare - Physically

WALKING AND HIKING
·       Start preparing for the trek NOW by taking walks and hikes!
·       Take hikes as a family group!   The terrain at Hardware Ranch is hilly, hike hike hike to prepare!
·       Do a couple of long  family walks/hikes having the youth wear their trekking shoes and socks and a light backpack. If, or when you feel hot spots forming, stop! Go home, rub your feet with rubbing alcohol and let them dry out. This should allow you to form calluses that can protect you on the trek.

SHOES &; SOCKS
·       Sturdy Running shoes are the best for trekkers because they are specifically designed for cushioning, motion control, and support. Remember, your toes need room to expand, because your feet will swell a full shoe size as you walk on the trek.
·
·       Keep in mind that hiking boots do not provide motion control features that many people need, and may be inflexible and heavy.

·        Many people believe that your shoes must be broken in.  The actual key is to slowly and increasingly train while wearing the activity specific footwear.  This causes your foot to adapt to the shoe in a process known  as foot hardening.  Thus, if you have old "broken in" shoes that you haven't worn for a long time, you will still get blisters.  You need to wear the trek shoes--new or old--for long enough to get your feet used to them (or re-used to them, if they are old.)  Because damp feet are the main cause of blisters and natural fibers hold moisture, avoid wool and cotton socks.  Choose polyester, acrylic or polypropylene socks which wick moisture away from the foot.  Cushioned insoles in shoes help prevent blisters as well.

NUTURITION / WATER
·       Begin drinking lots of water at least a month before going on  trek
·       Remember, the trek experience is an authentic one.  You will not have canned pop on the trek.  If canned or bottled pop is a habit for you, we encourage you to "dry up" for at least a week before the trek.

CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT:
·       Begin gathering all of your required clothing and equipment NOW!  January is not too early!  Start borrowing from friends or checking DI and thrift stores for trek clothing. Remember to bring items that you don’t care if they are damaged or get dirty.  See packing tab on this website.
·       Sew your clothing yourself! You can  find patterns and ideas here: handcart-trek.org/clothing.html

Prepare - Spiritually

  • Pray morning and night as a family
  • Attend all your church meetings every Sunday together

  •  Attend the temple with your youth

Serve

  • ·    Find someone for the missionaries to teach
  • ·    Invite the missionaries into your home for dinner
  • ·    Listen to the spirit for promptings on who you can serve
  • ·    Do family history
  • ·    Put on  a Family Home Evening for your family about the pioneers
