Search your family history for someone who
was a pioneer or who is a “modern day” pioneer!

Learn everything you can about that person and find a photo if you can.
Come to trek prepared to share their story

The main objective for this visit/activity is to help each youth and trek participant to:

    1. Find a pioneer to trek for (preferably an ancestor).
    2. Find a pioneer story to share (preferably an ancestor).
    3. Find a family name to take to the temple.

Also, for any leaders (Ma's and Pa's) and/or youth that cannot attend with their designated ward date/time, please attend on your own.

Activity IDEAS for YOUTH LEADERS to help
prepare your ward youth for TREK

We invite individuals, young men, young women, wards and families to help prepare youth for trek!
The stake will sponsor only one pre-trek activity on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 that will replace Mutual. Here the youth will meet their mas and pas and trek family members.

So get creative and plan meaningful, fun and enriching activities that will better prepare the youth to have a wonderful trek experience!

Here are a few ideas of some activities in each of the three purpose categories of trek:

Remember, Prepare and Serve

Remember:
Each youth will be trekking “for someone”!
Help youth search their family history for someone who was a pioneer or who is a modern day pioneer!
Help them learn everything they can about that person and find a photo if possible.
Help them come to trek prepared to share a story about this member of your family!

Prepare Physically:
Prep Tip:
WALKING AND HIKING:
·       Start preparing for the trek NOW by taking walks and hikes!
·       Take hikes as a mutual group!   The terrain at Hardware Ranch is hilly, hike hike hike to prepare!
·       Do a couple of long walks wearing your trekking shoes and socks and a light backpack. If, or when you feel hot spots forming, stop! Go home, rub your feet with rubbing alcohol and let them dry out. This should allow you to form calluses that can protect you on the trek.

*INFORMATION ABOUT SHOES & SOCKS
·       Sturdy Running shoes are the best for trekkers because they are specifically designed for cushioning, motion control, and support. Remember, your toes need room to expand, because your feet will swell a full shoe size as you walk on the trek.
·       Make sure that the shoes you select for trek are comfortable and broken in – do not wear new shoes!  Wearing the wrong shoes on the trek will mean foot pain and blisters.
·       Keep in mind that hiking boots do not provide motion control features that many people need, and may be inflexible and heavy.
·       Wear sox without cotton!  Some suggest wearing a nylon stocking underneath a pair of hiking socks

NUTURITION / WATER
·       Begin drinking lots of water at least a month before going on  trek
·       Remember, the trek experience is an authentic one.  You will not have canned pop on the trek.  If canned or bottled pop is a habit for you, we encourage you to "dry up" for at least a week before the trek.

CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT:
·       Begin gathering all of your required clothing and equipment NOW!  January is not too early!.  Start borrowing from friends or checking DI and thrift stores for trek clothing. Remember to bring items that you don’t care if they are damaged or get dirty.  See packing tab on this website.
·       Sew your clothing as a youth activity! You can  find patterns and ideas here: http://handcart-trek.org/clothing.html

PREPARE SPIRUTUALLY:
·       Encourage the youth to:
·       Pray morning and night
·       Attend all thier church meetings every Sunday
·       Attend mutual
·       Listen to and obey the promptings of the spirit
·       Pray for the spirit to be with them
·       Ponder during the sacrament
·       Read their scriptures daily at least 15 minutes
·       Fulfill priesthood responsibilities
·       Attend the temple
·       Give service
·       Sing or listen to pioneer songs
·       Think of something that they could /  will sacrifice until trek begins
·       Write in your journal your feelings about the Savior, the Gospel and the Pioneers
·       Memorize scriptures about remembering, preparing and serving.
·       Gather quotes about the pioneers and record them in your journa
·       Fulfill a requirement for Personal Progress or Duty to God about the Pioneers
·       Read and discuss: Be Ye Converted:- Talk by Sister Oscarson  http://www.lds.org/general-conference/2013/10/be-ye-converted?lang=eng
·

Serve:
·    Find someone for the missionaries to teach
·    Do baptisms in the temple
·    Invite the missionaries to your class to speak
·    Interview your own grandparents about stories of their past
·    Listen to the spirit for promptings on who you can serve
·    Do family history
·    Prepare as a class a Family Home Evening for your family about the pioneers and then share it with your family
·    Do indexing
·    Host a “grandparents” evening for the elderly in your ward.  Have them tell stories of their heritage
·    Express gratitude to each member of your family
·    Babysit for people  so that they can attend the temple
